Prodiamine outperformed pendimethalin in this study[1]. My state extension recommends prodiamine or dithiopyr, and my lay understanding is prodiamine is the more effective of the two.

Ive had trouble finding prodiamine at big box hardware stores and also trouble finding it without fertilizer mixed with it. The last few years Ive bought a generic prodiamine-fertilizer granular mix from Walmart, usually in March. IIRC its in blue and white bags.

In my experience, Ive had to apply at rates higher than the bag recommended for good control. Last year I also applied it over the top of several ornamental shrubs/perennials and did not notice any damage to them.
